Saturday, Nov. 9, the small town of Loco’s Volunteer Fire Department will throw a Cajun Feast as a fund raiser for the organization.
The feast will include all cajun food and fixin’s for just a donation to the department. The eatin’ should begin about 5 pm at the fire department located on Highway 53, 18 miles east of Comanche.
Following the feast will be an old fashion pie auction and drawings for numerous door prizes.
The department has about 18 trained volunteers who not only fight home and wild fires, but also respond to traffic accidents and other emergencies. Being in a rural area, so far from medical facilities, it is important to have trained responders who can be on scene quickly. They also respond to assist other volunteer departments when needed.
Funds raised will be used to maintain the departments equipment and assist in training.
Loco was officially established in 1890 with a post office. Located in the southeast part of Stephens County, the population at the 2000 census was 150 residents. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says the town was named for locoweed found in the area.
