Stuever to burn weekend oil at Grady County Fairgrounds

By Conrad Easterday, CTCN Editor

Duncan resident Mike Stuever has preserved more than 2,000 examples of the craftsmanship and artistry that have turned Aladdin Mantle Lamp Co. products into sought-after collectibles. Only 90 or so lamps will be on display at this weekend’s Fall Fling Craft & Vendor Show at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha, but collectors and customers won’t be disappointed with the wares.
Aladdin started making mantle lamps in 1908, Stuever said. Much of his collection are from that era. Aladdin is still in business today.
The Aladdin brand lamps use a mantle and wick combination that produces up to six times more light than flat wicked kerosene lamps.
“A mantle lamp is like a Coleman lamp,” Stuever explained.
Area residents may already be familiar with Stuever’s lamps. He’s been showing them twice a year for the last 30 years.
eBay and other collectors are the main sources for obtaining new lamps.
“All the old-time collectors are dying off,” Stuever said. “Young people don’t seem interested in it.”
There’s still money to be made and spent in collecting mantle and other types of lamps, however. A rare lamp in good condition can go for as much as $5,000. The average Aladdin mantle lamp will fetch about $175 for the seller.
“People will call me from all over the country about these things
The two-day show will last from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 18-19, but the lamps may be put away by 3 p.m. Saturday, so latecomers may miss the opportunity to see the lamps if they arrive after that time.
Both Aladdin and Coleman lamps will be displayed at the three tables Stuever’s wares will occupy at the east end of the building. Chimneys, wicks, oil and other supplies will also be on hand.
Vendor spaces are still available for the Fall Fling Craft & Vendor Show. Contact Valerie Wood at (405)-403-4132.
