Close races and modest turnout mark primary runoff election

By Conrad Easterday, CTCN Editor

The results of June’s primary were echoed Tuesday in voting for the primary runoff election.

With all precincts reporting, the winners included Ruth Bingham of Grady County, Stacy Jo Adams of Stephens County, and most of the school bond issues. A $66 million Blanchard Public School proposition failed.

In Grady County, Ruth Bingham unseated incumbent District 2 Commissioner Kirk Painter. Unlike the primary race, however, Painter and Bingham were not neck and neck in Tuesday’s voting. With all precincts reporting, Bingham garnered 615 votes for 55.16 percent of balloting. Painter won 500 votes and 44.84 percent of the total. In June, the pair had been only 14 votes apart.

“I do think some of the negative publicity helped me out a little bit,” Bingham said of her opponent. “I’m very happy. I’m very honored that the voters would trust me to be their commissioner.”

Stacy Jo Adams, the insurance agent from Duncan seeking the 50th District House seat in the Legislature, won nearly 62 percent of the vote. Voters cast 2,287 ballots for her and 1,419 for her opponent, fellow Republican Andrew Aldridge. With no Democrats vying for the position, Adams is the last surviving Republican. She will step into her role without needing to participate in the November general election.

Aldridge received praise from Adams.

“First, I want to say thank you to Andrew just for putting his name in the hat,” she said. “It takes a lot to go out and do this.”

With close supporters whooping in the background as more precincts reported in her favor, Adams said her margin of victory was due to hard work.

“I knocked a lot of doors and got in front of a lot of people,” she said. “The people spoke; the dark money didn’t win, and I am happy to represent the people of District 50.”

Adams said she was expecting a congratulatory call from Gov. Stitt before election night ended.
