Approving Tax Increment Finance districts will be just one of many items on the Chickasha City Council’s 6:30 p.m. Tuesday meeting. After six months of study by a committee the Council appointed, including two hearings in August, the city’s leaders are expected to vote on a Downtown district and a highway district to raise funds for infrastructure improvements in those areas.
Tax Increment Finance districts don’t create new taxes for any of the city’s residents, but they do allow government to reallocate funds created as the valuation of property in the districts increase. Properties usually increase in value over time. And only 50 percent of ad valorem, sales and hotel tax increment captured in the TIF districts will be retained for infrastructure improvement projects. The other half will be returned to the city, county and schools.
Tuesday’s meeting will be the last chance for Chickasha residents to voice any concerns or support for the TIF districts.
