Car flips upside down trying to avoid pedestrian on turnpike shoulder


 An accident on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike occurred on Sunday January 7, at 5:09 a.m., approximately 3.2 miles south of Ninnekah and sent a Lawton woman to the hospital.
 According to Highway Patrol reports, a 2017 Nissan Murano driven by Shannon Helton, 53, of Lawton, was traveling eastbound at mile marker 69 in the outside lane on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike when the driver went into the inside lane to avoid pedestrian on the shoulder. The Nissan then struck a 2012 Honda Accord that was disabled on its top and unoccupied in the middle of the inside lane.  
 Helton was transported by Chickasha EMS to Grady Memorial in Chickasha, then transported by Chickasha EMS to OU Trauma in Oklahoma City and admitted with back injuries.
 2012 Honda Accord was unoccupied. The driver and passenger were standing on the shoulder of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike.
 The eastbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed until 8 a.m.
 The incident was investigated by Trooper Patrick Surber #951 of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike of Troop YC. Assisted by Trooper Randall Milam #453 of Troop YC, Chickasha EMS, Chickasha Fire Department, Grady County Fire Department, Pioneer Fire Department, and Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
