The regular business meeting begins at 7:00 pm and the guest speaker will be Grady County District Attorney Jason Hicks speaking about the confusion that the Supreme Court ruling referred to as the McGirt Decision and how it affects all Oklahomans.
Bertrand said, “We will start the general meeting at 7pm, and District Attorney Jason Hicks will discuss the fallout from the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma. This decision put into question the sovereignty of the state as we’ve known it since 1907, and has created serious public safety concerns for all Oklahomans”.
In 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of child rapist Jimcy McGirt on the grounds that the Creek Nation’s reservation was never disestablished for criminal jurisdiction.
The Supreme Court ruling brings into question if Oklahoma state courts no longer have the authority to prosecute crimes committed by or against Oklahomans who are also tribal members? Are hundreds of criminal cases now being dismissed because the state does not have the ability to try and convict criminals on historic tribal lands? What does this mean for all Oklahomans?
The meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Chickasha, 324 West Colorado.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
