Duncan and Stephens County residents may notice an increase in traffic over the next few days, as visitors arrive for the World’s Largest Garage Sale.
The annual event, usually held the third weekend in July, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday this week. However, some garage sales will begin Thursday.
The event typically brings in thousands of visitors to the Duncan area each year, and many of those people have made it a tradition to attend from year to year. The World’s Largest Garage Sale is often noted as being one of the largest tourism-attracting events for the Duncan community, along with the National Swine Registry Hog Show in the fall.
The World’s Largest Garage Sale dates back to 1985, following a round of layoffs. However, since that time, the event has continued to grow. This certainly became true when the City of Duncan no longer required permits to host garage sales.
Although the Duncan Chamber of Commerce sets the dates each year for the event, the World’s Largest Garage Sale is not a Chamber event. The Chamber does receive numerous calls about the event, starting after the beginning of the year and picking up in May.
