The Oklahoma Highway Patrol partnered with the Oklahoma National Guard to assemble Stranded Motorist Assistance Recovery Teams (SMART) that assisted motorists during this most recent winter storm.
The four SMART teams assembled in Miami, Claremore, McAlester and Durant but are mobile and able to adapt to the changing weather conditions. Each team consists of two (2) Humvees, one (1) wrecker, ten (10) national guardsmen and one (1) trooper.
SMART teams were out Wednesday through Friday and their primary goal was to recover motorists who may have become stranded in the storm. In addition, they removed stalled or stuck vehicles from the roadway.
SMART teams were last assembled almost one year ago during the 2021 winter storms.
