She attended both Northwestern State University and UT-Tyler and made lifelong friends while there. From her first marriage in 1979 she was blessed with two of her daughters, Diana in 1983 and Katie in 1986. After moving to Texas, she married her husband of 26 years, Greg, in 1995. In addition to her role as Yaya, she worked at Chickasha Public Schools joining the Lincoln Elementary family as a paraprofessional loving her students like they were her own family.

Though some of her family lived far away from her, she maintained close ties with them and spoke to them frequently including a very close relationship with her mother, Ann, or as Julie referred her, “The Number One Lady”.
