Funeral services for James Lee Mayhugh,55, his wife Patty Jane Mayhugh, 54, and their daughter Shayla Lynn Mayhugh,28, all of Chickasha, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2024 at Bible Baptist Church with J.C. Reed officiating and Kim Hayes assisting.
The family was found dead of gunshot wounds on Saturday May 11th after a 911 caller reported shell casings on the front porch and three people possibly dead inside a home in the 1000 block of South 6th in Chickasha.
According to reports, police forced their way into the home and found an AR-15 style gun inside the home. Later the gun was found to have been purchased recently by Jacob Mayhugh, a son of the slain couple, leading him to be a person of interest in the case.
Following a 3 day search, authorities located the younger Mayhugh in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown, where he was arrested on Tuesday, May 14th.
Reportedly court documents say Jacob Mayhugh confessed to the killings and had plans to commit other acts of violence. Those ‘other acts of violence’ are unknown or have not been released.
During the investigation, authorities learned that Jacob told his girlfriend on May 10 that he was going to eat pizza at his parents’ house that evening. Court documents say a plate of pizza, as well as a full pizza, were found inside the home after the murders. The state says that, plus the purchase of the AR-15 a little more than two weeks before the incident, “are consistent with a plan to commit a crime.”
Jacob was found sitting on some steps in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown. He was arrested without incident and has since been charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
Records show Mayhugh was booked into the Grady County jail and charged with 3 counts of first degree murder. He faces the death penalty or up to three life sentences if found guilty.
