Chickasha City Council Approves Strong Code Enforcement Measures

The Chickasha City Council has approved strong revisions to the city’s code enforcement regulations. These revisions give officials more authority to clean up dilapidated properties and to remove vehicles and other items stored outside in public view.
A measure on abandoned, wrecked, and non-operating vehicles was approved by a 5-4 vote after Mayor Chris Mosley broke a tie by voting in favor of the ordinance. Voting for the proposal were Zack Grayson, Nate McCalla, Kia Ginn, and Georgianne Hebblethwaite. Voting against were Dr. R.P. Ashanti-Alexander, Brian Gerdes, Kelly Boyd, and Oscar Nelson.
A measure of Unlawful Storage of Abandoned Items was approved by a 6-3 vote with Mosley, Nelson, Ginn, Hebblethwaite, Grayson, and McCalla voting yes and Boyd, Ashanti-Alexander, and Gerdes voting no. The ordinance makes it illegal to store abandoned items outdoors in public view – regardless of whether they would be covered with a tarp or under a canopy. In another change to the ordinance is that the Community Development Director will serve as the hearing officer in demolition cases.
Chickasha City Council, Municipal Authority and Airport Authority Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month, with the exception of March and December. Meetings are held in the Council Chambers, located on the Second Floor of City Hall, at 117 N. 4th St., Chickasha, OK 73018.
