At the April 12, 2021 board meeting, the CPS Board of Education approved the hiring of Jace Johnson as CHS math teacher and Head Girls Basketball Coach. Jerry Don Bray, CPS District Activities Director, stated: “We feel great about the hire of Coach Johnson. He is a great young coach with a plan to move our girls basketball program forward with excitement, energy, and toughness. Coach Johnson is going to be a huge addition for our athletic program and we are very excited about the future.”
Jace Johnson has served as a head girls basketball coach for six years, an assistant coach for two years and an associate head coach for one year. He led the girls varsity basketball team at Bethel Public Schools, where he improved the program from (14-12) record his first season to top 10 rankings and 20+ wins the next two. Johnson also took Bethel to the Oklahoma State Tournament in 2015 and was an Academic State Champion in 2016. He was also named as an OGBCA Regional Coach of the year in 2015 and has served on multiple OCA all-state committees.
He is coming from Holdenville Public Schools where he lifted a two-win club to a team that ended their season ranked 19th in class 3A in his third year with the program.
He comes from a strong coaching pedigree, his father Jerry Johnson, amassed over 600 career victories; made 16 State Tournament appearances (12 in a row); 4 State Championships; was the first two-time Oklahoma Coach of the year recipient; and one of eight finalists for the National Coach of the Year in 2011.
Coach Jace Johnson’s teams are known to play with a high level of intensity. He teaches hard-nosed, full court and half court pressure defense, as well as, an innovative offensive system.
“We believe in putting pressure on our opponents on both ends of the floor. That starts with quality fundamentals and an extensive understanding of the game of basketball along with creating a mindset in which we are the aggressor at all times on the court.”
“We are incredibly excited for the opportunity to help build the Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks girls basketball team into one of the premier girls basketball programs in the state of Oklahoma. We truly believe that with a great deal of effort from our student-athletes and staff, we can create a program that the school and community will be extremely proud of for years to come.”- Jace Johnson
